CTF Awards Scholarships for
Transportation Students
|
|
CTF
proudly supports the next generation of transportation leaders by
providing scholarships to college students intent on pursuing
transportation careers. The Foundation provides scholarships in
cooperation with cosponsoring groups, by administering endowed programs or
in a few instances by direct grants. In 2007, 62 individual awards
totaling nearly $50,000 were provided. Of this amount about 80% of the
grant money was contributed to the Foundation by sponsoring groups or was
income from endowed programs administered by CTF. |

New scholarship
programs are added each year. In 2007, CTF created an annual $5,000
Scholarship available to California university students, majoring in
transportation-related fields, who are selected to attend the yearly
CTF Transportation Education
Symposium. Recently an additional $5,000 annual award was
established in honor of Heinz Heckeroth, the founder of the
Foundation. Eligibility for the latter program is being determined
but will likely involve continuing support of a prior CTF
scholarship recipient.

The majority of
the scholarship programs involve the active participation of
interested employees who organize committees to administer the
awards. Eligible students are either graduating high school seniors
or college students interested in careers in transportation.
Candidates come from adopt-a-school programs, are sons/daughters of
transportation employees or are themselves transportation employees.
The sponsoring committees determine eligible student group,
application criteria, selection process and the amount of the
awards. CTF receives contributions to its Scholarship Fund and
disburses the grants. The Foundation adds some of its own money in
the process – 50% of an initial program year’s grant(s) and 25% in
subsequent years. |

The Foundation’s
largest endowed program is the Jim Roberts Memorial Fund, currently
granting three or four annual $1,000 scholarships to graduating high
school seniors interested in transportation careers. |

In addition to our
cooperative programs families or groups sometimes create a
scholarship program in memory of a loved one or to honor a
transportation individual. Some of these programs are short term and
others are endowed in perpetuity. A $1,000 annual award is possible
if $20,000 is conservatively invested in today’s economic
environment. Seven of the annual scholarship awards are funded with
income earned from nearly $200,000 in endowments |

Establishing a
Scholarship |
|
|
|
Setting up a scholarship
fund correctly requires legal filings with the IRS, audits, and time spent
analyzing financial records. CTF streamlines the process by serving as
the fiscal agent for people wishing to establish a transportation
scholarship fund. If you are interested in establishing a scholarship
contact Heinz Heckeroth at (916) 453-1767 to learn how CTF can help. |
